Blue Note
Blue Note is the most storied and influential jazz label in history, with a catalog of nearly 3,000 releases that defined the sound of modern jazz from its bebop origins through Hard Bop, Soul-Jazz, Post Bop, and far beyond. Founded in New York City in 1939, the label became synonymous with a particular aesthetic rigour: Rudy Van Gelder’s warm, immaculately detailed studio sound, Reid Miles’s iconic cover designs, and an unwavering commitment to giving musicians the space and resources to record without compromise. Through the 1970s, Blue Note pivoted confidently into Jazz-Funk and Soul-Jazz territory, with Donald Byrd’s Street Lady (1973) and Bobbi Humphrey’s Blacks and Blues (1974) standing as landmarks of that era. Key releases from the classic period include John Coltrane’s Blue Train (1958), Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage (1965), and Wayne Shorter’s Speak No Evil (1966), recordings that remain definitive statements of what jazz can be at its most focused and alive.
