Wynton Kelly

Wynton Kelly was born on December 2, 1931, in Brooklyn, New York, to Jamaican immigrant parents. He began piano at age four and entered professional music at twelve. Kelly quickly established himself in the R&B circuit of 1940s Brooklyn, performing with bandleaders Eddie Vinson, Hal Singer, and Eddie Davis while playing organ in local churches. This early immersion in blues and rhythm and blues shaped his swinging, blues-inflected piano style. Miles Davis later described it as combining the driving rhythmic approach of Red Garland with the delicate harmonic sensibilities of Bill Evans.

After military service from 1952 to 1954, Kelly worked as a sideman with vocalist Dinah Washington. He appeared on her Mercury sessions from 1955 to 1957. Kelly then collaborated with Charles Mingus in 1956 and 1957, followed by work with Dizzy Gillespie’s big band in 1957. His breakthrough came in early 1959 when he joined the Miles Davis Quintet. Kelly remained in that group until 1963. He performed the driving blues solo on “Freddie Freeloader” from Kind of Blue, Davis’s 1959 modal album. This appearance established him as both sideman and soloist.

As a leader, Kelly recorded New Faces–New Sounds for Blue Note in 1953. He recorded Kelly Blue for Riverside in 1959 and Kelly Great for Vee-Jay in 1960. These albums showcased his ability to swing with authority while exploring bebop and blues-inflected material. After leaving Davis’s group in 1963, Kelly formed his own trio with bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. The ensemble became one of the most respected piano trios of the 1960s, recording regularly for Riverside, Vee-Jay, Verve, and Milestone. Kelly recorded over 120 albums as a sideman during his career.

He appeared on sessions with John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Hank Mobley, and guitarist Wes Montgomery, earning recognition as one of the era’s finest accompanying pianists. Kelly died in Toronto on April 12, 1971, at age 39, following an epileptic seizure at the Westminster Hotel. He had battled epilepsy throughout his life.
