Wolfgang Muthspiel

Wolfgang Muthspiel was born on 2 March 1965 in Judenburg, Styria, Austria. His father loved Mozart and encouraged violin studies from age six. At fourteen, Muthspiel switched to classical guitar after encountering improvisation. He studied classical and jazz guitar at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, winning national competitions and the International Guitar Competition in Mettman, Germany. In 1986, he emigrated to the United States to study at the New England Conservatory of Music and Berklee College of Music. There he studied jazz composition and guitar with Mick Goodrick and classical technique with composer David Leisner.

Muthspiel recorded his first three albums with his trombonist brother Christian between 1985 and 1989. His solo debut, Timezones (1989, Amadeo), followed by The Promise (1990, Amadeo), established him as a distinctive voice in contemporary jazz. He then joined vibraphonist Gary Burton’s quintet, a position previously held by Larry Coryell and Mick Goodrick. This role brought international touring and recognition as a first-call sideman. During the 1990s, Muthspiel relocated to New York City and recorded extensively as a bandleader. He appeared on albums by Paul Motian, Gary Peacock, and Marc Johnson. In 1997, he was named Austrian Jazz Musician of the Year.

Muthspiel’s relationship with ECM Records began in 2013 when he appeared on Travel Guide as a member of a cooperative guitar trio with Ralph Towner and Slava Grigoryan. His ECM leader debut, Driftwood (2014), featured bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Brian Blade, establishing a rhythm section central to his sound. The album showcased his fluency with both electric and acoustic guitars. Subsequent recordings Rising Grace (2016) and Where The River Goes (2018) featured trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and pianist Brad Mehldau alongside various bass-drum combinations. His prolific partnership with Scott Colley on bass and Brian Blade on drums produced Angular Blues (2020) and Tokyo (2025, both ECM), reinforcing the power of this trio format. Muthspiel’s guitar style combined lyrical sensitivity with elegant harmonic language and seamless integration of electronic and acoustic textures. His unaccompanied album Solo (2004) revealed an idiomatic adaptation of Ornette Coleman’s free-jazz vocabulary to the guitar.

Beyond his work as a performer, Muthspiel founded Material Records in 2000, developing it into an influential independent label for contemporary jazz. He established the Focusyear project in Basel, an annual mentorship program for young musicians emphasizing ensemble playing and exposure to visiting master musicians. These ventures reflected his commitment to supporting the broader jazz community. Muthspiel remained one of the most influential guitarists of his generation, navigating contemporary jazz, classical music, world music, and pop contexts with equal artistic integrity.
