Tomasz Stańko

Tomasz Stańko was born on July 11, 1942, in Rzeszów, Poland, during Nazi occupation. He grew up under communist rule and first encountered jazz through Willis Conover’s Voice of America broadcasts. The music’s message of freedom captivated him. Stańko attended Dave Brubeck’s 1958 concert in Poland, a moment that crystallized his ambition to become a jazz musician. After studying at Cracow Music Academy, he made his professional debut in Krakow in the late 1950s.

Stańko co-founded the Jazz Darings with pianist Adam Makowicz in 1962 when he was 20 years old. The ensemble drew inspiration from Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, and George Russell. His career shifted direction in 1963 when he joined pianist Krzysztof Komeda’s quintet. Stańko remained with Komeda until 1967, absorbing lessons in harmonic sophistication and compositional lyricism. The 1966 album “Astigmatic” represented European post-bop at its most refined. When Komeda died unexpectedly in 1969 at age 37, Stańko composed “Music for K” in 1970 as a tribute.

Stańko formed his own quintet in 1968 featuring violinist Zbigniew Seifert. He recorded “Balladyna” in 1976, “Almost Green” in 1979, and “Music 81” in 1984, establishing himself as a central figure in Polish jazz. His partnership with saxophonist Tomasz Szukalski and drummer Edward Vesala produced celebrated performances. After two decades away from ECM Records, Stańko achieved major international recognition beginning in 1993 when he formed a quartet with then-16-year-old drummer Michał Miśkiewicz, pianist Marcin Wasilewski, and bassist Sławomir Kurkiewicz.

The quartet’s debut ECM recording, “Matka Joanna” (1994), marked a significant career resurgence. His 1997 tribute “Litania: The Music of Krzysztof Komeda” became an international festival fixture. Producer Manfred Eicher assembled “From The Green Hill” in 1998, featuring Dino Saluzzi, John Surman, and Jon Christensen. The album won Germany’s Critics Prize as Album of the Year in 2000. Stańko died on July 29, 2018, at age 76 in Warsaw from lung cancer complicated by pneumonia. His brooding, cinematic tone and improvisational daring earned comparisons to Miles Davis while maintaining a uniquely Eastern European sensibility. ECM Records released 53 of his recordings across a career spanning from European free jazz pioneer to mentor of younger generations.
