Shelly Manne

Sheldon Manne was born in Manhattan on June 11, 1920, into a drumming family. His father Max Manne pioneered sound synchronization for motion pictures. His uncles were also drummers. Originally an alto saxophonist, Manne switched to drums at age 18 after studying with Billy Gladstone, a New York theatrical percussionist. Jo Jones and Dave Tough influenced his early style. He worked the 52nd Street jazz scene during the late 1930s and 1940s. Manne made his first professional appearance with the Bobby Byrne Orchestra in 1940. During the early 1940s, he substituted for Dave Tough in the Benny Goodman and Joe Marsala bands. He recorded with Dizzy Gillespie’s earliest sessions as a leader and became a first-generation bebopper.

Manne joined Stan Kenton’s orchestra in 1946 and remained through two stints until 1952. His precise timekeeping made the Kenton ensemble swing despite its size. Between engagements he played with Woody Herman and recorded with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. His willingness to work across all jazz styles became his defining quality. In 1952, Manne relocated to Southern California with his wife, seeking both musical opportunity and a lifestyle centered on horses. This move catalyzed his greatest achievements. After recording his debut bandleader album “Here’s That Manne” in 1952, Manne formed Shelly Manne & His Men in 1953 for Contemporary Records. He became a founding father of West Coast cool jazz.

Between 1955 and 1962, Manne released the four-volume “At the Black Hawk” series, recorded at a San Francisco nightclub. These recordings became his signature work. He led acclaimed sessions with pianist André Previn and bassist Leroy Vinnegar on “Modern Jazz Performances of Songs from My Fair Lady,” bridging Broadway standards and jazz. His sidemen included trumpeter Conte Candoli and tenor saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre. In 1954, Manne launched a parallel career as Hollywood’s most prolific studio drummer, beginning with Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rear Window.” He appeared on hundreds of film and television soundtracks. This studio work established him as indispensable to the Los Angeles entertainment ecosystem.

Manne ran Shelly’s Manne-Hole nightclub from 1960 to 1974, nurturing new talent while maintaining a recording presence. He recorded “Empathy” in 1962 with pianist Bill Evans and bassist Monty Budwig, showcasing his ability in trio settings. The 1970s brought recordings including “Mannekind” (1972) and “The Three” (1976) with Joe Sample and Ray Brown. He performed with the L.A. Four and served as Tom Waits’ studio drummer. Manne died of a heart attack on September 26, 1984, at age 64. He had been honored two weeks earlier with “Shelly Manne Day” by Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley. His legacy rests on phenomenal technique, musicality, and openness to all jazz styles, establishing him as a major figure in West Coast jazz and one of the most versatile drummers in the idiom.
