Bio
Roy Edward Ayers Jr. was born September 10, 1940, in Los Angeles to a musical family. His father Roy Sr. played trombone, and his mother Ruby taught piano. Ayers was immersed in music from infancy. At age five, he attended a Lionel Hampton concert where the vibraphonist gave him a pair of mallets. During adolescence, he experimented with steel guitar, flute, trumpet, drums, and church choir singing. Ayers received his own vibraphone at seventeen and enrolled at Los Angeles City College. He soon prioritized professional work instead, performing in the 1960s hard-bop scene alongside saxophonist Curtis Amy on Central Avenue. His debut album, West Coast Vibes, appeared in 1963 on United Artists Records.
In 1966, Ayers joined flutist Herbie Mann’s ensemble and gained national exposure. He recorded three albums for Atlantic Records under Mann’s production. By 1970, Ayers formed Roy Ayers Ubiquity, naming the group after his Polydor album because “ubiquity” meant existing everywhere at once. This shift proved transformative. Between 1970 and 1979, Ubiquity released seventeen albums on Polydor and produced numerous hits. The 1973 Coffy soundtrack fused jazz sophistication with cinematic funk for director Jack Hill’s blaxploitation film. Mystic Voyage followed in 1975, featuring the underground disco anthem “Brother Green.” Everybody Loves the Sunshine arrived in 1976, with its title track becoming widely sampled in hip-hop and R&B. Major hits included “Change Up the Groove” (1974), “Running Away” (1977), and “Fever” (1979).
During the 1980s, Ayers expanded his sound with synthesizer-driven arrangements. In the Dark arrived in 1984 on Columbia Records, produced by bassist Stanley Clarke. He collaborated with Rick James and appeared on recordings with Fela Kuti. By the 1990s and 2000s, his music found new audiences through hip-hop sampling and the acid jazz movement. Ayers appeared on Guru’s Jazzmatazz Vol. 1 in 1993 and on Erykah Badu’s Mama’s Gun in 2000, which credited him as foundational to neo soul. He founded Uno Melodic and Gold Mink Records and released Virgin Ubiquity: Unreleased Recordings 1976–1981 in 2004. Late career appearances included Tyler, the Creator’s Cherry Bomb in 2015 and the collaborative album Roy Ayers JID002 in 2020. Ayers continued performing until 2023.
Ayers died March 4, 2025, in Manhattan at age 84 after a prolonged illness. His influence reshaped contemporary music across house, hip-hop, and neo-soul. Producers and samplers drew from his warm melodies, electronic sophistication, and rhythmic innovation. Ayers became one of jazz’s most sampled and reinterpreted artists, defining multiple generations of funk, soul, and R&B.
