Pat Martino was born Patrick Carmen Azzara on August 25, 1944, in Philadelphia. His father, Carmen “Mickey” Azzara, was a singer who studied with jazz pioneer Eddie Lang. At age twelve, his father gave him a Gibson Les Paul and introduced him to jazz. Martino studied guitar with Dennis Sandole, whose studio attracted emerging talents like John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner. He was influenced by Wes Montgomery’s bebop lines and began performing professionally at fifteen in New York City clubs and Atlantic City venues. By age seventeen, Martino was gigging with tenor saxophonist Willis Jackson.
His debut album, El Hombre (Prestige, 1967), announced a fully formed artist. Martino followed with East! (1968), Strings! (1968), and Baiyina (1968). Working as sideman with organists Jack McDuff, Don Patterson, and Charles Earland, he absorbed soul-jazz rhythmic drive and harmonic sophistication. His tone was warm, direct, and fleet. His bebop lines burned with precision and emotional clarity. Martino explored fusion on Consciousness (1974) and Starbright (1976), yet his core sound remained rooted in blues-drenched soul.
In 1980, Martino suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage from an arteriovenous malformation he had carried since birth. Emergency neurosurgery removed portions of his left temporal lobe and left him with complete retrograde amnesia. He could not recognize his parents or remember how to play guitar. Over seven years of rehabilitation, he listened to his own recordings and rebuilt his musical vocabulary through painful recovery. The Return (Muse, 1987) proved his virtuosity had deepened, infused now with freedom from competitive anxiety. His recovery became a testament to the brain’s capacity for reorganization and music’s redemptive power.
From 1994 onward, Martino recorded extensively for Blue Note, Muse, and HighNote Records. Live at Yoshi’s (Blue Note, 2001) and Remember: A Tribute to Wes Montgomery (Blue Note, 2006) showcased undiminished command and emotional maturity. He received four Grammy nominations and DownBeat named him Guitar Player of the Year in 2004. Martino taught at Berklee and the New School, becoming a model of artistic persistence. He stopped performing in 2018 due to respiratory illness and died November 1, 2021, at age seventy-seven in Philadelphia.
