Mel Brown

Melvin Ray Brown was born on October 7, 1939, in Jackson, Mississippi, into a musically gifted family. His father, John Henry “Bubba” Brown, was a noted blues figure and occasional accompanist to Delta legend Tommy Johnson. At age 14, while recovering from meningitis, Brown received his first guitar and spent hours studying recordings by B.B. King and T-Bone Walker. This period of illness marked his musical awakening. After recovering, he played in local Jackson ensembles, including the Duke Huddleston Orchestra and the Duke Juniors. Brown relocated to Los Angeles at age 19 to pursue session work.

By the early 1960s, Brown had established himself as a versatile session guitarist in Los Angeles. He performed on recordings spanning blues, R&B, and pop, from T-Bone Walker’s Funky Town to sessions with Etta James and Johnny Otis. Brown spent approximately two years with Johnny Otis’s orchestra, developing the warm, rich tone that became his signature sound. During his work with Etta James, he switched from a Gibson Les Paul to a hollow-bodied Gibson ES-175. Brown credited this instrument change with refining his distinctive approach. His session expertise impressed Impulse! Records producer Bob Thiele, who recognized Brown’s ability to blend blues, funk, and jazz—a fusion most guitarists of the era could not achieve.

Thiele invited Brown to record his debut album, Chicken Fat (1967), arranged by Herb Ellis and Oliver Nelson. The album featured Ellis on guitar and Gerald Wiggins on organ. Brown quickly followed with The Wizard (1968), Blues for We (1969), and I’d Rather Suck My Thumb (1970). This prolific run made Impulse! Records one of the funkiest imprints in its catalog. His 1970 album featured an 11-minute guitar solo titled “Eighteen Pounds of Unclean Chitlings.” Brown also recorded Mel Brown’s Fifth (1971) and Big Foot Country Gal (1973) during this period.

In 1971, Brown joined Bobby “Blue” Bland’s touring band, a partnership lasting over a decade. He appeared on Bland’s classic 1973 California Album. Despite this primary commitment, Brown maintained an active session career, recording with John Lee Hooker, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and Archie Shepp. In 1976 he relocated to Nashville, where his session schedule intensified. Brown briefly abandoned guitar to play piano during later collaborations with Bland. Around 1982 he departed from Bland’s band and moved to northeast Mississippi. By 1989 he had relocated to Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, where he became an influential figure on the local blues scene. Brown recorded later albums on Electro-Fi Records, including collaborations with blues harmonica players Snooky Pryor and Sam Myers. He died on March 20, 2009, in Kitchener at age 69, leaving a legacy as a master of soul-jazz fusion and one of the last great Mississippi-rooted guitar players.
