Max Roach

Maxwell Roach was born January 10, 1924, in Newland, North Carolina, to Alphonso and gospel singer Cressie Roach. His family moved to Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood when he was four. At age eight, Roach began piano lessons with his aunt, an unusual foundation for a drummer. He took up drums at age ten while singing in ensembles at Concord Baptist Church. This dual training in keyboard and percussion gave him melodic insight that shaped his drumming vocabulary throughout his life.

In 1942, Roach substituted for Duke Ellington’s drummer Sonny Greer at the Paramount Theatre, marking his breakthrough. That year he became house drummer at Monroe’s Uptown House, the legendary 52nd Street after-hours club where bebop vocabulary was forged. Between 1945 and 1953, he collaborated extensively with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Roach appeared on Parker’s Savoy sessions in November 1945 and on Miles Davis’s Birth of the Cool sessions from 1949 to 1950. Alongside Kenny Clarke, he transformed jazz drumming by shifting timekeeping from the bass drum to the ride cymbal and introducing thematic, conversational drum breaks that elevated percussion to equal partnership with horns.

In 1954, Roach formed a quintet with trumpeter Clifford Brown, tenor saxophonist Harold Land, bassist George Morrow, and pianist Richie Powell. The hard bop ensemble produced Study in Brown (1955) and At Basin Street (1956) on EmArcy Records. A car accident in June 1956 killed both Brown and Powell, shattering the group. Roach studied music theory and composition at Manhattan School of Music from 1950 to 1953, earning a degree. In 1952, he and bassist Charles Mingus founded Debut Records, which released influential recordings including Jazz at Massey Hall before closing in 1957.

During the 1960s, Roach engaged with social activism and experimental forms. In 1960, he composed We Insist! Freedom Now Suite with lyricist Oscar Brown Jr. and vocalist Abbey Lincoln, whom he married in 1962. The album addressed civil rights through jazz and appeared on Candid Records. Roach continued innovating through the 1970s and beyond, collaborating with saxophonists Archie Shepp and Anthony Braxton and pianist Cecil Taylor. He established M’Boom, his re:percussion ensemble, in the 1970s to explore percussion’s expressive range beyond traditional kit drumming. The National Endowment for the Arts honored him as a Jazz Master in 1984. Roach died August 16, 2007, in Manhattan at age 83, leaving a legacy that redefined the percussionist’s role from timekeeper to solo voice.
