Max Roach was born on January 10, 1924, in Newland, North Carolina. His mother, Cressie Roach, was a gospel singer. At age four, his family moved to Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. There he began piano lessons with his aunt, establishing an early musical foundation. By age ten, inspired by his mother’s singing, Roach took up drums in gospel ensembles at Concord Baptist Church. This dual training in piano and percussion remained unusual among drummers and shaped his technical approach throughout his career.

In 1942, Roach substituted for Duke Ellington’s drummer Sonny Greer at the Paramount Theatre. This marked his first major professional opportunity at age eighteen. That same year, he became house drummer at Monroe’s Uptown House, a legendary after-hours club on 52nd Street. Roach absorbed bebop’s revolutionary vocabulary from Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, and Thelonious Monk. The club became his laboratory for mastering the music’s demands. His technical fluency across multiple instruments—unusual for a primary drummer—gave him insight into melodic phrasing that most percussionists lacked.
