Marcus Miller

Marcus Miller was born on June 14, 1959, in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in Jamaica, Queens, in a musical family. His father William was a church organist and choir director, and through his father he was cousin to Wynton Kelly. By age 13, Miller had mastered clarinet, piano, and bass guitar. He also composed original material during his early teens.

Miller launched his professional career at 15, working in New York City with flautist Bobbi Humphrey and keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith. He established himself as a session musician and arranger by his early twenties. His breakthrough came in the 1980s when he joined Miles Davis’s band. Miller became producer and principal songwriter for three Davis albums: Tutu (1986), Music from Siesta (1987), and Amandla (1989). At age 27, he composed, arranged, and performed nearly all instrumentation on Tutu, a fusion of jazz, funk, and electronic textures that revitalized Davis’s career. The album demonstrated that synthesizer-driven arrangements could serve jazz at the highest level.

Miller’s solo career began with Suddenly (1983) and Marcus Miller (1984) on Warner Bros. Records, establishing a funk-soul aesthetic. He later signed with Dreyfus Jazz for The Sun Don’t Lie (1993), Tales (1995), and Free (2007). Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Miller served as producer and arranger for Luther Vandross, co-writing songs including “I Really Didn’t Mean It” and “Any Love.” His technical mastery of the electric bass revolutionized the instrument through fluid improvisational techniques and funky phrasing. These innovations influenced subsequent generations of musicians. He also maintained consistent work with saxophonist David Sanborn across multiple projects.

Miller’s later career expanded into film composition, producing scores for Marshall (2017) and Candy Cane Lane (2023). He released Renaissance (2012) on Concord Jazz, Afrodeezia (2015) on Blue Note, and Laid Black (2018) on Blue Note. His discography spans over 500 recordings in jazz, R&B, soul, and pop, collaborating with artists ranging from Herbie Hancock to Beyoncé. Miller has won multiple Grammy Awards and continues to perform and compose, establishing himself as a virtuosic bassist and visionary producer who bridges jazz tradition with contemporary music.
