Kenny Garrett was born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 9, 1960. His father played tenor saxophone, and his stepfather was a jazz enthusiast who also played the instrument. Garrett began saxophone at age eight under mentors Marcus Belgrave and Donald Byrd. He attended Mackenzie High School and performed locally with Mercer Ellington and Lyman Woodard. In 1978, at age seventeen, Garrett joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra under Mercer Ellington’s direction. He declined a Berklee College of Music scholarship to accept this opportunity. The position provided rigorous training in ensemble playing and the big band tradition through extensive North American and European tours.
From 1981 to the mid-1980s, Garrett became a fixture in New York’s straight-ahead jazz scene, performing weekly at the Village Vanguard with the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. He collaborated with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Freddie Hubbard, and Woody Shaw during these years. In 1984, Garrett recorded his debut as bandleader, Introducing Kenny Garrett, released on Criss Cross in 1985. His breakthrough came in spring 1987 when Miles Davis invited him to join his touring and recording band. Garrett remained with Davis until the trumpeter’s death in 1991, a five-year period that brought international exposure and refined his ability to blend post-bop with contemporary fusion. His appearances on Davis recordings and tours established him as a significant voice in modern jazz.
Following Davis’s death, Garrett pursued his ambitions as a bandleader and composer with increasing focus. Throughout the 1990s, he released Prisoner of Love (1989), African Exchange Student (1990), Black Hope (1992), Triology (1995), and Pursuance: The Music of John Coltrane (1996), which won Down Beat’s Jazz Album of the Year. His alto saxophone sound combined post-bop with funk, R&B, soul, and world music influences, marked by gritty and incantatory tones. Collaborators during this period included pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Nat Reeves, and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. Garrett studied Polynesian, Balinese, and Japanese musical scales while touring with Sting for Amnesty International in Africa, Greece, and Indonesia, expanding his harmonic vocabulary through direct cultural engagement.
Garrett continued composing and recording into the 2000s and 2010s, releasing Beyond the Wall (2006), Seeds from the Underground (2012), and Pushing the World Away (2013). His work increasingly incorporated spiritual themes and ancestral references, drawing influence from John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders. He became a mentor to emerging musicians through his own working band, following the example set by Art Blakey and other elders who had supported his own development. Garrett has collaborated with Chick Corea’s Freedom Band and the Five Peace Band, which brought together Corea, John McLaughlin, Christian McBride, and drummers Vinnie Colaiuta and Brian Blade. In 2023, Garrett received recognition as an NEA Jazz Master. He remains active as a composer, educator, and bandleader exploring diverse genres from hip-hop to electronic music.
