Kazumi Watanabe was born on October 14, 1953, in Tokyo. He began musical training on piano at age seven, then switched to guitar at twelve after hearing the Ventures’ electric surf rock. At fifteen, he committed to jazz after discovering Wes Montgomery’s recordings. Watanabe studied with Sadanori Nakamure at Yamaha Music School, one of Japan’s master guitarists. His debut album Infinite appeared in 1971 when he was seventeen, establishing him as a guitar prodigy.
Through the mid-1970s, Watanabe worked in Japan’s premier fusion ensembles alongside bandleaders Sadao Watanabe, Masaru Imada, and Isao Suzuki while leading his own groups. His international breakthrough came in 1979 with KYLYN, an all-star ensemble featuring keyboardist Ryuichi Sakamoto, vocalist Akiko Yano, and drummer Shuichi Murakami. The band’s debut album KYLYN established Watanabe as a significant fusion voice in Japan and internationally. That same year, he toured as guest guitarist with Yellow Magic Orchestra, gaining recognition across Asia and Europe. To Chi Ka (1980), produced by vibraphonist Mike Mainieri and featuring saxophonist Michael Brecker, bassist Marcus Miller, and drummer Peter Erskine, showcased his sophisticated fusion approach.
Watanabe founded the fusion band Mobo in 1983 with saxophonist Mitsuru Sawamura, pianist Ichiko Hashimoto, bassist Gregg Lee, and drummer Shuichi Murakami. Mobo Club (1983) and Mobo Splash (1985) demonstrated his evolving style. His most celebrated works came with The Spice of Life (1987) and The Spice of Life Too (1988), recorded with Yes drummer Bill Bruford and bassist Jeff Berlin. These albums created a distinctive high-energy fusion sound that influenced Japanese and international musicians. Watanabe’s technical command, dynamic improvisation, and synthesis of jazz, rock, electronic, and world music established him as Japan’s most versatile fusion guitarist.
Later in his career, Watanabe pursued acoustic guitar, collaborated with pianist Koko Tanikawa, and led the New Electric Trio with bassist Richard Bona and drummer Horacio Hernández. He founded the Asian Super Guitar Project to promote fusion across Asia. Watanabe became guest professor at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music and received the Fumio Nanri Award in 1991. He remained an active performer and educator for more than five decades, continuously innovating across fusion, rock, electronic, and world music.
