Bio
John Scofield was born on December 26, 1951, in Dayton, Ohio, and grew up in Wilton, Connecticut. He began playing guitar at age 11, inspired by rock and blues musicians including Chuck Berry and B.B. King. Scofield attended Berklee College of Music from 1970 to 1973, studying under guitarist Mick Goodrick and meeting saxophonist Joe Lovano. His early professional work included a 1974 recorded reunion concert at Carnegie Hall with Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker. Upon leaving Berklee, he joined the Billy Cobham–George Duke fusion band from 1974 to 1977 and briefly recorded with Charles Mingus in 1976.
Scofield began his career as a bandleader in 1978, releasing his debut album John Scofield on Enja Records with bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Adam Nussbaum. Bill Stewart later replaced Nussbaum, and their partnership became central to Scofield’s sound through the 1980s and beyond. His breakthrough came in November 1982 when he auditioned for Miles Davis in Cleveland. Though Davis initially dismissed him, Scofield listened to the band that evening and began playing with them the following night. From 1982 to 1985, he recorded three studio albums with Davis: Star People (1983), Decoy (1984), and You’re Under Arrest (1985). Scofield co-wrote compositions and earned writing credits alongside keyboardist Robert Irving III, establishing himself among contemporary jazz’s leading figures.
Following his departure from Davis in 1985, Scofield led the Blue Matter Band and released Still Warm (1986) and Blue Matter (1987), exploring funk and soul-jazz directions. In 1990, he recorded Time on My Hands with saxophonist Joe Lovano, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Jack DeJohnette on Blue Note Records. Throughout the 1990s, Scofield collaborated with guitarist Bill Frisell on Grace Under Pressure (1992) and with guitarist Pat Metheny on I Can See Your House from Here (1994). He partnered with organist Larry Goldings beginning in 1994, producing albums emphasizing funk and soul-jazz. His later work included A Go Go (1998) with Medeski, Martin and Wood, Überjam (2002), and Up All Night (2003), exploring drum-and-bass elements and collaborations with British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage on Scorched (2002).
Scofield won three Grammy Awards, including Best Jazz Instrumental Album in 2016 for Past Present and in 2017 for Country for Old Men. He received the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2010. Scofield continues as an adjunct professor at New York University and tours approximately 200 days annually, maintaining his influence on contemporary jazz through versatility across fusion, post-bop, and genre-blending approaches that combine blues feeling with sophisticated harmonic and melodic sensibilities.
