Pacific Jazz released “For Django” in 1964, Joe Pass’s tribute to Django Reinhardt that established his bebop guitar approach before producer Norman Granz built Pablo Records around showcasing Pass’s technique. “Virtuoso” (1974) demonstrated unaccompanied guitar using chord melody and rapid single-note runs, establishing a solo guitar format Pass explored across multiple volumes through 1978. His collaboration with Ella Fitzgerald yielded “Take Love Easy” (1974) and “Fitzgerald & Pass…Again” (1976), showcasing accompaniment skills behind a vocalist, while work with Oscar Peterson’s trio earned a 1974 Grammy.

Pablo documented Pass’s range across more than 290 total releases. Guitar duos with Herb Ellis including “Two For The Road” (1974) explored two-guitar interaction, while “The Big 3” (1976) with Milt Jackson and Ray Brown combined vibes, guitar, and bass. “Portraits Of Duke Ellington” (1975) demonstrated his command of Ellington’s repertoire, while Brazilian-influenced recordings including “Tudo Bem!” (1978) with Paulinho Da Costa and “Brasamba!” (1963) with Bud Shank and Clare Fischer documented Latin jazz vocabulary. Sessions with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and appearances on Pablo all-star dates maintained output through the 1980s.

Los Angeles session work ran parallel to his performance career, placing him on numerous pop, rock, and easy listening recordings through the 1960s and 1970s. World Pacific releases including “The Stones Jazz” (1967) and “Simplicity” (1967) documented his versatility, while instructional materials and teaching extended his influence. Final performances in 1993 preceded his death from liver cancer in May 1994, leaving an extensive discography on Pablo, Pacific Jazz, World Pacific, and Concord documenting bebop vocabulary applied across solo, duo, trio, and ensemble contexts.
