Joseph Paul Locke was born on March 18, 1959, in Palo Alto, California. His family moved to Rochester, New York, where his father taught music. Locke began studying drums and piano at age eight. At thirteen, his mother purchased a vibraphone from a newspaper advertisement. He did not touch the instrument for a year. One rainy Saturday, Locke decided to play it, a moment he later credited as life-changing. Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson, and Mike Mainieri influenced his approach to the instrument. He attended the Eastman School of Music, studying classical percussion and composition with John Beck, Gordon Stout, and David Mancini.
Locke moved to New York City in 1981 at age twenty-two to launch his professional career. He worked as a sideman for Kenny Barron, Freddy Cole, Grover Washington Jr., and Eddie Henderson. His improvisational approach and melodic sense made him a sought-after vibraphonist throughout the 1980s. Present Tense (1990) on SteepleChase Records marked his debut as a leader. The album revealed both technical skill and compositional depth.
From the early 1990s onward, Locke emerged as a bandleader and composer. He recorded the duet album But Beautiful (1991) with pianist Kenny Barron. His post-bop quartet produced Work Wire Walker (1993), followed by Moment to Moment: The Music of Henry Mancini (1995). In 1999, Locke co-founded the Mutual Admiration Society with pianist David Hazeltine. This ensemble emphasized collaborative interplay in accessible post-bop settings. Four Walls of Freedom (2003) presented a six-movement suite inspired by Thomas Merton’s writings, featuring tenor saxophonist Bob Berg, bassist James Genus, and drummer Gary Novak. His trio Storms/Nocturnes with pianist Geoffrey Keezer and saxophonist Tim Garland released Storms/Nocturnes (2001) and VIA (2011), exploring chamber-like textures.
Locke gained significant recognition in his later career. The Royal Academy of Music in London appointed him International Vibraphone Consultant in 2008 and elected him Honorary Associate (Hon ARAM) in 2013. He won six Jazz Journalists Association Mallet Instrumentalist of the Year Awards and topped DownBeat magazine’s Vibraphonist Critics’ Poll. Rochester inducted him into the Music Hall of Fame in 2016. Recent recordings including Subtle Disguise (2018) and Makram (2023) demonstrate his continued commitment to innovative musicianship and collaboration with diverse artists.
