Jimmy Garrison

Jimmy Garrison was born in Miami, Florida, on March 3, 1934, and grew up in Philadelphia. He learned bass during his senior year of high school in the city’s vibrant 1950s jazz scene. Garrison emerged alongside McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, and trumpeter Lee Morgan as a promising young musician.

Between 1957 and 1960, Garrison recorded with diverse leaders including trumpeter Kenny Dorham, clarinetist Tony Scott, drummer Philly Joe Jones, and saxophonists Jackie McLean and Lee Konitz. His first recordings came in 1959 with Ornette Coleman on Art of the Improvisers. That same year he played on Coltrane’s My Favorite Things. His work with Coleman earned respect in New York’s avant-garde circles for his earthy, hard-swinging approach that contrasted with other bassists in that idiom.

Garrison joined John Coltrane’s quartet in late 1961 at the Village Vanguard, initially sharing the bass chair with Reggie Workman. He became the formal member in December 1961 and remained until Coltrane’s death in July 1967. On recordings like Chasin’ the Trane (1962) and A Love Supreme (1964), Garrison’s firm foundation enabled Coltrane’s harmonic and spiritual investigations. He was the only sideman from the classic quartet retained when Coltrane formed his later group with Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, and drummer Rashied Ali. Garrison frequently performed unaccompanied bass solos as song introductions in concert, showcasing his improvisational depth.

After Coltrane’s death in 1967, Garrison worked with Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, and Elvin Jones in the Impulse! catalog. He also taught at Bennington and Wesleyan colleges. Garrison died from lung cancer on April 7, 1976, in New York City at age 42. His role as a bass player proved essential to Coltrane’s most significant recordings, establishing him as a cornerstone of 1960s spiritual jazz and avant-garde exploration.
