Bio

Jeff Parker was born on April 4, 1967, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and raised in Hampton, Virginia. He began on piano before switching to guitar, inspired by his father’s playing. Private teacher Jon Spencer encouraged improvisation and songwriting during his early years. Parker attended Berklee College of Music in Boston for six years, developing foundational skills in jazz and improvisation. In 1991, at age 24, he relocated to Chicago to immerse himself in the city’s experimental and jazz scene.

Parker quickly established himself as a central figure in Chicago’s avant-garde jazz movement during the 1990s. He joined the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) as an associate member in 1995. Parker co-founded Isotope 217, an electro-jazz fusion ensemble, in the late 1990s with cornetist Rob Mazurek. He joined the post-rock band Tortoise in 1996, contributing guitar to their 1998 album TNT, a landmark release in their catalog. During this period, Parker also performed with Ernest Dawkins, Ted Sirota, and Fred Anderson, establishing himself as a versatile sideman.

Parker launched his career as a leader in the 2000s with Like-Coping, released on Delmark Records in 2003. The trio featured bassist Chris Lopes and drummer Chad Taylor. His second album, The Relatives, appeared in 2005 on Thrill Jockey with pianist Sam Barsheshet joining the core trio. Bright Light In Winter followed in 2012 on Delmark, maintaining the piano-trio format. Parker’s 2016 releases marked a turning point: The New Breed and Slight Freedom both appeared on major year-end jazz lists. The New Breed drew on neo-soul, funk, and hip-hop influences while fusing 1970s soul-jazz sensibilities with contemporary production.

From 2016 onward, Parker’s output expanded significantly. Suite For Max Brown debuted at number one on the Billboard jazz chart in 2020. Forfolks followed in 2021, and Mondays At The Enfield Tennis Academy appeared in 2022 with saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butterss, and drummer Jay Bellerose. Parker started a weekly residency in 2016 at Los Angeles’s ETA venue in Highland Park, which evolved into the ETA IVtet ensemble known for long-form groove-oriented improvisations. His contributions earned him a 2022 United States Artists Fellowship. Parker has recorded on over 150 releases with collaborators including Andrew Bird, Joshua Redman, and Tom Zé, bridging jazz tradition with electronic and experimental approaches.
