Bio
Jack DeJohnette was born August 9, 1942, in Chicago to Jack DeJohnette and Eva Jeanette Wood, both Great Migration migrants. His grandmother Rosalie Anne Wood raised him on the South Side. Uncle Roy L. Wood Sr., a pioneering Black disc jockey, introduced him to jazz. DeJohnette began piano lessons at age four at the Chicago Conservatory of Music but lost interest in early adolescence. At thirteen, he took drum lessons to join his high school band after hearing Fats Domino’s “Blueberry Hill.” From 1957 to 1965, DeJohnette performed as a pianist and drummer in Chicago jazz ensembles. He gained experience across R&B, hard bop, and avant-garde settings while engaging with AACM experimentalists like Muhal Richard Abrams and Roscoe Mitchell. His work with John Coltrane in the early 1960s shaped his musical direction profoundly.
DeJohnette moved to New York City in 1966 and quickly became a sideman with Charles Lloyd’s quartet from 1966 to 1968. This group brought him international recognition. He met pianist Keith Jarrett in Lloyd’s ensemble. DeJohnette subsequently worked with Jackie McLean, Abbey Lincoln, Betty Carter, and Bill Evans, joining Evans’ trio in 1968. In November 1968, Stan Getz sessions led to his first work with Miles Davis. The following year, Davis hired DeJohnette as his primary drummer at age twenty-six, replacing Tony Williams in the live band. DeJohnette played drums on Bitches Brew (1970), the fusion album that transformed jazz. Davis valued his ability to merge rock and funk grooves with jazz sophistication. He remained with Davis through 1971, contributing to Live-Evil (1971) and Jack Johnson (1971).
From 1972 onward, DeJohnette led numerous groups as both pianist and drummer. He recorded Sorcery (1974) and Cosmic Chicken (1974) for Prestige, exploring fusion and modal jazz. His 1975 trio Gateway, co-led with guitarist John Abercrombie and bassist Dave Holland, became influential in contemporary jazz. DeJohnette began recording for ECM Records in 1976, leading ensembles including Directions, New Directions with Lester Bowie, and Special Edition featuring David Murray and Howard Johnson. In 1983, Jarrett invited him and bassist Gary Peacock to form the Standards Trio. This ensemble recorded Standards Vol. 1 (1983), Standards Vol. 2 (1985), and Changes (1984), interpreting the American songbook with renewed sophistication. The Standards Trio performed for over thirty years and became one of jazz’s most celebrated ensembles.
DeJohnette remained creatively restless throughout his later career. He released solo piano albums including The Jack DeJohnette Piano Album (1985) and Return (2016), asserting his identity as a complete musician. His work encompassed world music, electronics, and meditative soundscapes. He won a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album in 2009 with Peace Time. DeJohnette founded the Jack DeJohnette Group with saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa in 2010. He received an NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship in 2012 and was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2007. He died of congestive heart failure on October 26, 2025, at HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston, New York, at age eighty-three, surrounded by his wife Lydia Ann Herman and close family. DeJohnette left behind over thirty-five albums as leader and more than six hundred recordings spanning six decades, reshaping the drummer’s role from timekeeper to melodic and harmonic voice.
