Bio
Idris Muhammad was born Leo Morris on November 13, 1939, in New Orleans’ 13th Ward. He began drums at age eight and performed in a Mardi Gras parade by age nine. Muhammad developed his distinctive hi-hat technique from an unlikely source: the rhythmic hissing of a steam presser at the dry cleaner next to his childhood home. He sought formal instruction from drummer Paul Barbarin, but Barbarin declined, believing Muhammad’s natural instincts would serve him better than formal training.
Muhammad began his professional career at age 14 in 1954 with The Hawketts on “Mardi Gras Mambo.” By 1956, he had contributed drums to Fats Domino’s “Blueberry Hill.” In the early 1960s, he transitioned to session work with soul artists including Sam Cooke, Jerry Butler, and The Impressions. Around 1966, he became house drummer at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. In 1967, Muhammad joined alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson’s band, establishing himself in New York’s jazz scene. With Donaldson, he recorded “Alligator Bogaloo” (1967) and “Hot Dog” (1970) on Blue Note Records, helping define the soul-jazz crossover sound.
Muhammad served as the original drummer for the Broadway musical Hair from 1968 to 1972, composing intricate rhythmic patterns from 43 pages of chord changes. During this period, he became Prestige Records’ house drummer from 1970 to 1972, appearing on over 150 recordings in jazz, funk, and soul. He released his debut album as a leader, “Black Rhythm Revolution!,” in 1970, followed by “Peace and Rhythm” in 1971. Both albums blended New Orleans rhythmic traditions with contemporary styles. His work on the Kudu label—“Power of Soul” (1974), “House of the Rising Sun” (1976), and “Turn This Mutha Out” (1977)—embraced a harder funk aesthetic and became heavily sampled by hip-hop artists.
By the late 1970s, Muhammad joined Johnny Griffin’s band and collaborated with saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. During the 1980s, he performed and recorded with Ahmad Jamal, Chico Freeman, and Sonny Rollins, relocating to Europe for much of the decade. He returned to New Orleans in 2011. Muhammad died of kidney failure on July 29, 2014, at age 74, and was buried according to Islamic traditions in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His approach balanced R&B’s infectious groove with jazz sophistication, using space and restraint to shape dynamic shifts. His work rooted in New Orleans second-line traditions but infused with funk energy influenced generations of drummers.
