Ichiro Masuda was born on May 23, 1933, in Japan. He emerged as a leading vibraphonist in Tokyo’s jazz scene during the early 1960s. Masuda joined the Swing Session ensemble alongside clarinetist Eiji Kitamura and pianist Kazuo Yashiro. He worked as a versatile session musician in swing and bebop styles with prominent Japanese bandleaders. His 1965 debut album as leader, Kayō Hit Soft Touch, appeared on Nippon Columbia and launched his recording career.
Masuda’s international reputation grew substantially in the mid-1970s through collaborations with American jazz masters. In early 1976, he recorded with pianist Hank Jones, producing The Song Is Ended on the Victor label alongside bassist Masanaga Harada and drummer Taketoshi Igarashi. Later that year, Masuda worked with bass virtuoso Ray Brown on The Most Special Joint, featuring pianist Cedar Walton and drummer Billy Higgins. These sessions demonstrated his ability to integrate seamlessly with world-class musicians. His transatlantic partnerships elevated his standing while confirming his reputation as a melodically sophisticated improviser.
Beginning in 1978, Masuda undertook an ambitious series of songbook albums featuring American jazz standards. His Richard Rodgers Song Book and Cole Porter Song Book appeared in 1978 on Trio Records. These albums showcased his lyrical sensibility and technical mastery of the vibraphone. He adopted a tasteful, swing-oriented approach to reinterpreting the American songbook. From 1974 through the 1990s, Masuda appeared on approximately 42 recording sessions, consistently collaborating with Kitamura and other regional leaders.
Masuda’s 1982 album The Swing Session: Ichiro Masuda Meets Friends united him with longtime associate Eiji Kitamura, pianist Teddy Wilson, saxophonist Akira Miyazawa, bassist Koji Toyama, and drummer Isamu Harada. This project crystallized his role as a bridge between Japanese and international jazz communities. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he recorded extensively with Kitamura, pianist Hidehiko Matsumoto, and vibraphonist Milt Jackson, notably on Remembering Bags. Masuda’s artistry was grounded in swing fundamentals and respect for American jazz traditions filtered through a distinctly Japanese sensibility.
Masuda continued performing actively into the 2020s, recording interpretations of Cole Porter standards and other material. His catalog spans six decades with 74 releases, concentrated in the 1970s (34 releases) and 1980s (18 releases). He mentored younger musicians through extensive sideman work while honoring swing-era aesthetics. Masuda’s legacy rests on his technical sophistication and his authentic contribution to Japan’s post-war jazz establishment.
