Bio
Hiromasa Suzuki was born in Tokyo on May 26, 1940. He became a pianist, composer, and arranger who shaped Japanese jazz fusion in the 1970s. Suzuki worked professionally as ‘Colgen’ and blended jazz-funk with traditional Japanese instruments, creating sounds that anticipated world-music fusion by a decade. His early training is not well documented, but his emergence coincided with the global expansion of electronic keyboards and synthesizers into jazz.
Suzuki’s breakthrough came with the Rock Joint concept series on RCA Records. Rock Joint Biwa appeared in 1972 with guitarist Kiyoshi Sugimoto and wove ancient biwa strings into psychedelic rock and early fusion frameworks. The album drew thematic inspiration from the classical text Furukotofumi. His follow-up, Rock Joint Cither – Silk Road (1973), centered on sitar and Indian musical elements and established Suzuki’s reputation as an innovative crossover composer. These recordings became foundational works in Japanese fusion, with particular praise for Sugimoto’s guitar work and Suzuki’s arrangements that integrated psychedelic textures and rhythmic vitality.
From 1976 forward, Suzuki expanded his palette with keyboard-driven fusion works. High-Flying appeared in 1976 and was produced by Jiro Inagaki. Skip Step Colgen followed in 1977 and showcased his mastery of electronic piano and synthesizer in funk contexts. Both albums reflected influences from Herbie Hancock and Weather Report, featuring disco-funk numbers like ‘Scramble’ and ‘Between O&M.’ Suzuki was a cornerstone arranger for Akira Ishikawa’s Count Buffaloes and co-founded The Electro Keyboards Orchestra alongside Yuji Ohno and Masahiko Satoh. He also led The Players, a six-piece fusion ensemble featuring saxophonist Mabumi Yamaguchi, guitarist Tsunehide Matsuki, and bassist Akira Okazawa. The Players’ 1979 album Galaxy exemplified mature fusion craft and showcased Suzuki’s compositional depth.
Suzuki’s later work extended to film scoring for anime soundtracks, including The Triton (1978–1983), and collaborations with vocalists such as Kayoko Ishu. Over his career, he released 184 recordings across Columbia, Toshiba, and RCA Records, establishing himself as an essential bridge between Western fusion idioms and Japanese musical consciousness. Suzuki died in Tokyo on May 21, 2001, five days before his 61st birthday. His legacy rested on prolific output and conceptually adventurous fusion work that shaped Japan’s understanding of contemporary jazz.
