Grant Green learned guitar from his father in St. Louis while attending elementary school. His father played blues and folk music. Green started professional work at age 13 with gospel ensembles, then expanded to jazz and R&B bands through the 1950s. His main influences came from horn players rather than guitarists, particularly Charlie Parker and Lester Young. This shaped his linear single-note approach that avoided chordal playing. Lou Donaldson discovered Green at a St. Louis bar in 1959 and brought him to New York. Alfred Lion signed him to Blue Note immediately as a leader, not a sideman. Between 1961 and 1965, Green appeared on more Blue Note albums than any other artist on the label. His debut as leader was “Grant’s First Stand” (1961), followed by “Green Street” and “Grantstand” the same year. The organ trio format with Hammond organ and drums became his primary setting. Green worked extensively with organists John Patton, Larry Young, and Baby Face Willette. Albums like “Sunday Mornin’” (1962), “The Latin Bit” (1963), and “Feelin’ the Spirit” (1963) explored gospel, Latin, and spiritual themes. “Idle Moments” (1965) featured Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, McCoy Tyner, and Elvin Jones. It became his most celebrated session. Green left Blue Note in 1966 for Verve’s “His Majesty King Funk,” marking his shift toward funk and soul-jazz. Substance abuse problems led to inactivity from 1967 to 1969. His return to Blue Note yielded funk-influenced recordings including “Green Is Beautiful” (1970) and “Alive!” (1970). Sessions recorded in 1964 with Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner remained unreleased until after his death. Green was hospitalized throughout most of 1978 but returned to performing against medical advice. While in New York for an engagement at George Benson’s Breezin’ Lounge, he collapsed in his car from a heart attack on January 31, 1979. He was 43. His recordings became foundational to acid jazz and hip-hop sampling, with “Sookie, Sookie” sampled by Us3 for a 1990s worldwide hit.
