Gil Evans

Ian Ernest Gilmore Evans was born May 13, 1912, in Toronto, Canada. His family relocated to Stockton, California, where he grew up hearing Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong on records. Evans saw Ellington perform in 1927, an experience that crystallized his musical ambition. At age 16, he led his first band. By 1933, he had assembled an ensemble playing his own transcriptions of arrangements by Don Redman, Ellington, and Henderson. In 1937, singer Skinny Ennis hired Evans as pianist and arranger for the Bob Hope radio show in Hollywood, providing early professional visibility.

Evans’s defining period came as arranger for Claude Thornhill’s orchestra from 1941 to 1948. He pioneered a revolutionary orchestration combining French horns, tuba, flutes, and clarinets with traditional big band sound. This created a subdued, vibrato-less quality that became his signature approach. After moving to New York in 1946, Evans opened his basement apartment to musicians including Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, and composer George Russell. In 1948, he formed a nonet with Miles Davis to perform arrangements based on his “fast and light and no vibrato” concept. These recordings from 1949 to 1950 at the Royal Roost were reissued as Birth of the Cool in 1957, establishing the cool jazz aesthetic.

From 1957 to 1960, Evans orchestrated three collaborations with Miles Davis for Columbia Records: Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, and Sketches of Spain. Sketches of Spain drew from Spanish classical compositions, most notably Joaquín Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez.” The album won three Grammy Awards and introduced jazz to mainstream audiences through its flamenco-influenced orchestrations. Evans continued leading his own orchestra through the subsequent decades, recording albums including Svengali in 1973. He collaborated with pianist Masabumi Kikuchi and percussionist Airto Moreira in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1987, at age 75, Evans recorded a live session with rock musician Sting at the Perugia Jazz Festival.

Evans received a Guggenheim Fellowship and was inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. He died March 20, 1988, at age 75, in Cuernavaca, Mexico. His sophisticated arrangements and unconventional instrumentation reshaped jazz orchestration across multiple idioms including cool jazz, modal jazz, and fusion.
