Gary Burton was born on January 23, 1943, in Anderson, Indiana. He began music at age six, mostly teaching himself vibraphone and marimba. At sixteen, Burton studied piano while attending Princeton Community High School. Bill Evans’ harmonic innovations inspired his approach to the instrument. Burton developed a four-mallet vibraphone technique that allowed simultaneous melody and harmony, departing from the prevailing two-mallet tradition.

At seventeen, Burton made his professional recording debut in Nashville in 1960 with guitarists Hank Garland and Chet Atkins. He attended Berklee College of Music from 1960 to 1961, studying with Herb Pomeroy and befriending composer Michael Gibbs. Burton toured with pianist George Shearing and composed arrangements for the 1965 album Out of the Woods. From 1964 to 1966, he played with saxophonist Stan Getz, establishing himself as a respected sideman and winning Down Beat’s Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition award in 1965. In 1967, Burton formed the Gary Burton Quartet with guitarist Larry Coryell, bassist Steve Swallow, and drummer Roy Haynes. Their debut album Duster arrived in 1970, blending jazz, country, and rock before the fusion movement gained prominence.

Burton expanded into solo and duo contexts in the early 1970s. His solo album Alone at Last, recorded at the 1971 Montreux Jazz Festival, won his first Grammy Award. In 1973, he began a historic collaboration with pianist Chick Corea that would span four decades and produce eight albums together. Their recordings earned six Grammy Awards across multiple decades. Burton joined Berklee College of Music’s faculty in 1971 and eventually served as dean and executive vice president during a 33-year tenure through 2004. He received an honorary doctorate in 1989.

From the 1980s onward, Burton recorded for GRP, ECM, and Concord Records, collaborating with Pat Metheny, Keith Jarrett, and other major jazz musicians. His 1990 album Reunion with Metheny and other ensemble members reached the top of Billboard’s jazz chart. His 1998 release Like Minds with Corea, Metheny, Roy Haynes, and Dave Holland won a Grammy Award. Burton published his autobiography Learning to Listen in 2013. He retired from performing in March 2017 following a farewell tour. Burton won seven Grammy Awards from twenty-two nominations and is recognized for pioneering the four-mallet vibraphone technique, developing jazz fusion, and popularizing duet performance in jazz.
