Bio
Eric Gale was born on September 20, 1938, in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, to an American mother and British father. Growing up fluent in German and Spanish, he developed early exposure to diverse cultures through family visits to England. He began playing guitar at age twelve and attended private Catholic schools. His exceptional mathematical ability allowed him to skip junior high. During high school, Gale frequently visited saxophonist John Coltrane’s home for after-school jam sessions. These experiences shaped his distinctive style. After earning a master’s degree in chemistry from Niagara University, he briefly taught at Penn State University. Gale chose to pursue music professionally rather than pursue a doctorate.
By the early 1960s, Gale established himself as an essential session guitarist in New York. He recorded with Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, Nina Simone, and King Curtis. His work appeared on Van Morrison’s 1967 recording of “Brown Eyed Girl” and contributed to Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.” In the early 1970s, Gale became a founding studio musician for CTI Records and its Kudu subsidiary under producer Creed Taylor. He recorded extensively with Bob James, Stanley Turrentine, and Grover Washington Jr. Gale served as a core member of Stuff, an influential R&B and funk band featuring drummer Steve Gadd and pianist Richard Tee. His solo career produced Forecast in 1973 and Ginseng Woman in 1977. He played guitar on Van McCoy’s 1975 hit “The Hustle” and contributed to Grover Washington Jr.’s “Just the Two of Us.”
Gale collaborated frequently with Roberta Flack during the 1970s. He performed on her 1973 album Killing Me Softly after she personally requested his participation. His versatility allowed him to move seamlessly between jazz-funk, fusion, soul, Latin, and disco idioms. Few musicians were equally comfortable backing pop vocalists, jazz ensembles, or funk bands. Gale’s work appeared on over five hundred albums across three decades. His stylistic consistency and inventive tone distinguished him from other session guitarists. This breadth of work established him as one of the most prolific recording musicians of his era.
Gale died of lung cancer on May 25, 1994, at age fifty-five in Baja California, Mexico. He was survived by his wife Masako Murakami-Gale, three daughters, and four grandchildren. His legacy as a session guitarist remains distinct: few musicians appeared on as many significant recordings, and fewer still maintained such technical consistency and inventive expression across diverse genres.
