Eddie Henderson

Edward Jackson Henderson was born on October 26, 1940, in New York City to a jazz family. His father performed with the Charioteers vocal group, and his mother danced at the Cotton Club in Harlem. At age nine, Henderson received a trumpet lesson from Louis Armstrong through his mother’s connections. This early exposure shaped his musical direction decisively.

Henderson’s family moved to San Francisco in 1954, where he studied classical trumpet at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music from 1954 to 1956. Miles Davis, a family friend, encouraged him to pursue jazz seriously and invited him to performances. After high school, Henderson served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1961. He then earned a Bachelor of Science in zoology from UC Berkeley in 1964 and an M.D. from Howard University Medical School in 1968. His athleticism extended beyond music: he competed in figure skating and won regional titles during this period.

Henderson joined Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi sextet in 1970 as a substitute trumpeter. What began as a one-week engagement extended to three years. Alongside Bennie Maupin, Julian Priester, Buster Williams, and Billy Hart, Henderson helped establish jazz fusion’s electronic vocabulary. The group recorded Mwandishi (1971), Crossings (1972), and Sextant (1973) for Columbia Records. His cool tone and inventive phrasing impressed Hancock and defined Henderson’s artistic foundation.

Following Mwandishi’s breakup in 1973, Henderson led his own bands throughout the decade. His debut, Realization (Capricorn, 1973), reflected the group’s fusion sound. Inside Out (Capricorn, 1974) continued this direction. Henderson then recorded for Blue Note: Sunburst (1975) and Heritage (1976) balanced electronic textures with his warm, vocal-inflected tone. Capitol Records released Comin’ Through (1977) and Mahal (1978), the latter containing “Prance On,” which later influenced hip-hop and acid-jazz artists. During this period, he completed psychiatric residencies at UC Hospital and Forest Hospital in California.

By the 1990s, Henderson shifted from fusion to acoustic post-bop. Inspiration (Milestone, 1995) and Dark Shadows (1996) reasserted his bebop foundation. He appeared frequently as a sideman with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Elvin Jones, Pharoah Sanders, and McCoy Tyner. Henderson joined Juilliard’s faculty in 2007 and Oberlin Conservatory in 2014. At 85, he continues performing and recording, most recently releasing Witness to History (Smoke Sessions, 2023).
