Edward Gale Stevens Jr. was born on August 15, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up absorbing jazz through the borough’s vibrant musical community. At age eight, Gale played trumpet in the First AME Church in Bedford-Stuyvesant and later joined the Boy Scouts’ bugle corps. He studied trumpet with jazz musician Kenny Dorham and soon sat in at jam sessions with Art Blakey, Max Roach, and Jackie McLean. Bebop pianist Bud Powell, a nearby neighbor, occasionally visited to hear him practice, signaling emerging talent.
During the mid-1960s, Cecil Taylor hired Gale for the pianist’s Blue Note debut Unit Structures (1966). That same year, organist Larry Young recorded him on Of Love and Peace. These performances impressed Blue Note co-founder Francis Wolff, who personally funded Gale’s two leader sessions. Gale recorded Eddie Gale’s Ghetto Music in September 1968, featuring an unusual sextet with dual bass players, dual drummers, and tenor saxophonist Russell Lyle. The work wove free jazz with soul and gospel during America’s turbulent year. Black Rhythm Happening (1969) followed with Elvin Jones and alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons, amplifying the ensemble’s spiritual intensity.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Gale toured and recorded with Sun Ra’s Arkestra. Sun Ra positioned him next to the piano to develop his avant-garde trumpet style. Musicians like saxophonist John Gilmore helped Gale integrate into the Arkestra’s cosmic sound. In 1966, he performed with the John Coltrane Quartet at the Half Note, where Coltrane became a mentor. He appeared on late-1970s Sun Ra recordings including Lanquidity and The Other Side of the Sun (both 1978).
Gale moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1971 and served as Artist in Residence at Stanford University. He settled in San Jose in 1972. In 1974, Mayor Norman Y. Mineta named him San Jose’s Ambassador of Jazz for his educational work. During the 1980s and 1990s, he remained active as a recording musician. He formed the Inner Peace Jazz Orchestra in the 1990s, which performed at Concerts for World Peace. Gale collaborated with Oakland hip-hop collective The Coup, blending his trumpet with their breakbeats. He founded improvisational music workshops at San Jose State University and engaged in healthcare advocacy for musicians. Gale died on July 10, 2020, at age 78 after battling cancer.
