Doug Carn

Doug Carn was born on July 14, 1948, in St. Augustine, Florida. His mother, Gwendolyn Seniors Carn, taught music in St. Johns County public schools and performed as a pianist-organist with Dizzy Gillespie. His uncle, Bill Seniors, was a jazz DJ who introduced Doug to bebop and swing. Carn began piano lessons at age five and switched to alto saxophone at eight. He studied oboe and composition at Jacksonville University from 1965 to 1967, then completed his education at Georgia State College in 1969. By age twenty, he recorded “The Doug Carn Trio” on Savoy Records with guitarist Gary Starling and drummer Albert Nicholson.

Carn moved to New York in 1969 and formed the Doug Carn Trio. There he met Sarah Jean Perkins, a music major at Morris Brown College. She became his wife and adopted the stage name Jean Carn as his principal vocalist. The couple relocated to Southern California in 1970 and signed with Gene Russell’s Black Jazz Records label in Oakland. Between 1971 and 1974, they released four albums that established spiritual soul-jazz as a distinct form: “Infant Eyes” (1971), “Spirit of the New Land” (1972), “Revelation” (1973), and “Adam’s Apple” (1974). Carn composed the material and arranged complex harmonic charts. His work featured bassist Henry Franklin, drummer Michael Carvin, saxophonist-flutist George Harper, and trombonist Al Hall Jr. On “Infant Eyes,” Carn used the Hammond organ as both rhythmic foundation and spiritual instrument while Jean’s five-octave vocal range anchored the sound.

Carn converted to Islam in the mid-1970s. He released “Al Rahman! Cry of the Floridian Tropic Son” (1977) on Tablighi Records with percussionist Abdul Rahim Ibrahim, merging jazz and soul with Muslim cultural elements. For decades afterward, he worked as a sideman, composer, and producer across diverse projects. His profile resurged in 1996 when “Higher Ground: The Best of Black Jazz Records 1971–1976” and “The Best of Doug Carn” were released on Soul Jazz Records. Carn taught piano and jazz improvisation at Jacksonville University and formed the West Coast Organ Band. He released the live albums “My Spirit” (2015) and “Free for All” (2019). Since 2010, he has reunited and toured regularly with ex-wife Jean at venues including Ronnie Scott’s in London and Lincoln Center in New York.
