Clifford Jordan

Clifford Jordan was born on September 2, 1931, in Chicago to a middle-class family. His mother taught school while his father worked for the post office and ran a radio repair shop. Jordan began classical piano lessons at age 5. He discovered the Chicago jazz scene through community venues where the city’s Black professional class gathered. At age 13, he switched to tenor saxophone. During high school at DuSable, he studied under director Walter Dyett alongside John Gilmore, Gene Ammons, and Johnny Griffin. Jordan performed locally throughout the 1950s before moving to New York City in 1957.

Jordan’s arrival in New York coincided with significant recordings that established his reputation. In 1957, he recorded Blowing In from Chicago with saxophonist John Gilmore and released his leadership album Cliff Jordan on Blue Note Records. The following year brought Cliff Craft, another Blue Note session that confirmed his hard bop credentials. He also appeared as a sideman on Paul Chambers’ 1958 Quintet, which featured pianist Horace Silver and drummer Art Blakey. During the 1960s, Jordan worked with Silver, J.J. Johnson, and Kenny Dorham, solidifying his position within the mainstream. His most significant engagement came as a founding member of Charles Mingus’s Sextet with Eric Dolphy, touring Europe in 1964. This collaboration deepened his harmonic approach while preserving his hard bop foundation.

Jordan’s mature period produced his most accomplished work. Starting in the 1970s, he led a quartet with pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Billy Higgins. This group recorded Glass Bead Games in 1974 on the Strata-East label, an album that demonstrated his artistic development beyond conventional hard bop. The record incorporated modal exploration and reflected his study of John Coltrane’s later work. Jordan continued leading groups throughout the 1980s and 1990s while serving as music director for Dancemobile and teaching at Henry Street Settlement. He maintained active involvement with Jazzmobile education programs. Jordan died of lung cancer on March 27, 1993, at age 61 in New York City. His approach to the tenor saxophone emphasized careful articulation, sensitive ensemble playing, and artistic integrity over commercial appeal. This commitment earned him deep respect among musicians despite modest mainstream recognition.
