Forrest “Chico” Hamilton was born on September 20, 1921, in Los Angeles to a musical family. His younger brother became actor Bernie Hamilton. At age eight, Hamilton discovered his passion for drums after witnessing Duke Ellington’s orchestra perform. He attended Jefferson High School, where he formed a band with future jazz legends including Charles Mingus, Dexter Gordon, Illinois Jacquet, Buddy Collette, and Ernie Royal. This ensemble launched his professional career in the Los Angeles Central Avenue jazz community during the late 1930s.
Hamilton was largely self-taught through ear training and jam sessions. He briefly studied stick technique with drummer Lee Young, Lester Young’s brother. During his U.S. Army service from 1942 to 1946, he received crucial mentorship from Jo Jones. By his mid-twenties, Hamilton had established himself as a sought-after sideman, playing with Lionel Hampton, Lester Young, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, and Billie Holiday. His six-year residency with Lena Horne from 1948 to 1954 proved formative for his accompaniment style. This period prepared him for leadership roles ahead.
Hamilton’s breakthrough came through his association with baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan’s pianoless quartet from 1952 to 1955. The group included trumpeter Chet Baker and bassist Bob Whitlock. This ensemble’s open textures rejected traditional bebop’s piano-driven harmonic structure and pioneered the cool jazz aesthetic. By 1955, Hamilton formed his own Chico Hamilton Quintet with an unconventional instrumentation featuring cello, flute, guitar, bass, and drums. The original lineup included Buddy Collette on flute and saxophones, Jim Hall on guitar, Fred Katz on cello, and Carson Smith on bass. Hamilton recorded “Chico Hamilton Quintet in Hi-Fi” (1956) and “Sweet Smell of Success” (1957, which also appeared in the film) for Pacific Jazz Records. His refined, melodically-oriented drumming employed single-headed toms to create subtle colors. He viewed drums as melodic instruments rather than purely percussive ones.
As the 1950s evolved, Hamilton’s groups underwent continuous personnel and stylistic changes. Eric Dolphy joined on bass clarinet and multiple reeds from 1958 to 1959 and contributed to “Gongs East” (1959) before departing to join Charles Mingus. Charles Lloyd took over as saxophonist and music director from 1960 to 1963, steering the quintet toward experimental and free jazz territory. By the mid-1960s, Hamilton moved into soul-jazz and fusion, recording “El Chico” (1966) on Impulse Records and “The Dealer” (1967) with guitarist Larry Coryell. His ensembles served as proving grounds for emerging talent including Ron Carter, Gabor Szabo, and Arthur Blythe. Hamilton relocated to New York City in 1965 and shifted toward film scoring and commercial music. He scored “Repulsion” (1965), Roman Polanski’s English-language debut, and the cartoon series “Gerald McBoing-Boing.” Hamilton returned to bandleading in the mid-1970s and co-founded the New School University Jazz and Contemporary Music Program in 1987. His Euphoria ensemble, launched in 1989, recorded prolifically for the Joyous Shout label well into his nineties.
Hamilton died on November 25, 2013, in Manhattan at age 92 from natural causes. His legacy encompasses nearly seventy years of continuous artistic evolution. He pioneered cool jazz while championing integration in segregated Los Angeles. His innovations in instrumental combination and orchestration influenced subsequent generations. Hamilton received the NEA Jazz Master Fellowship in 2004 and the Kennedy Center’s Living Legend Jazz Award in 2007.
