Bio
Armando Anthony “Chick” Corea was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, on June 12, 1941. His father was a Dixieland trumpeter who introduced him to piano at age four. Home recordings featured Bud Powell, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Lester Young alongside Mozart and Beethoven. Corea studied formally with pianist Salvatore Sullo from age eight, developing classical technique while absorbing bebop influences. He attended Columbia University and Juilliard briefly before dropping out to pursue professional work in New York. Between 1962 and 1967, he gigged with Latin jazz leaders including Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, Herbie Mann, and Stan Getz.
Corea’s breakthrough as a leader came in March 1968 with “Now He Sings, Now He Sobs,” recorded with bassist Miroslav Vitous and drummer Roy Haynes on Solid State Records. The trio album established him as a pianist of exceptional skill and originality. That fall, Corea joined Miles Davis’ quintet at a crucial moment in Davis’ career. Davis persuaded him to play Fender Rhodes electric piano, introducing him to fusion’s emerging sound. Corea appeared on four Davis albums: “Filles de Kilimanjaro” (1969), “In a Silent Way” (1969), “Bitches Brew” (1970), and “Live at the Fillmore East” (1970). These recordings defined jazz fusion’s emergence and showcased his ability to navigate complex harmonic spaces.
After leaving Davis in 1970, Corea co-founded Circle with bassist Dave Holland, drummer Barry Altschul, and saxophonist Anthony Braxton. The ensemble recorded the experimental double album “Paris-Concert” for ECM in 1971. His most influential project began in 1972 when he founded Return to Forever with bassist Stanley Clarke, violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, and later drummer Lenny White. The band recorded “Return to Forever” (ECM, 1972), “Light as a Feather” (Polydor, 1973), and “Romantic Warrior” (Columbia, 1976), combining Latin-Brazilian elements with rock and electronic keyboards. Return to Forever became a defining force in 1970s fusion. During this period, Corea also initiated his celebrated duet partnership with vibraphonist Gary Burton, recording “Crystal Silence” in 1972.
From the 1980s onward, Corea continued to explore diverse musical directions. He founded the Chick Corea Elektric Band in 1986, emphasizing synthesizers and rock-influenced arrangements on GRP Records. Corea also led the Akoustic Band from 1989 to 1991, restoring acoustic piano to prominence. His duet collaborations with pianist Herbie Hancock extended through the late 1970s and beyond. He pursued classical works and led ensembles including Origin. The 2006 NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship recognized his influence across modal jazz, fusion, and avant-garde traditions. Corea died on February 9, 2021, in Tampa, Florida, at age 79 from cancer. His 28 Grammy Awards, numerous compositions including “Spain” and “Windows,” and DownBeat Hall of Fame induction in 2010 established his legacy as one of jazz’s foremost pianists since Bill Evans.
