Bio
Charles Tolliver was born on March 6, 1942, in Jacksonville, Florida. His grandmother, Lela, gave him a cornet at age eight, sparking a lifelong devotion to brass music. He was largely self-taught on trumpet, developing a distinctive tone shaped by careful study of tradition. Tolliver attended Howard University in the early 1960s, where he studied pharmacy before deciding to pursue music full-time. He moved to New York and made his recording debut in 1964 as a sideman with pianist Jackie McLean on Blue Note Records.
Tolliver’s work as a sideman established his reputation among leading innovators. He recorded with Max Roach from 1967 to 1969, playing alongside pianist Stanley Cowell during Roach’s experimental rehearsals. His collaborations extended to Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Herbie Hancock, Roy Haynes, and Sonny Rollins, demonstrating his versatility across hard bop and avant-garde styles. In 1968, he emerged as a leader with Paper Man, a post-bop session featuring altoist Gary Bartz, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Joe Chambers. The album earned him DownBeat Critic’s Choice for trumpet. That same year, Tolliver co-founded Music Inc., a cooperative quartet with pianist Stanley Cowell, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Jimmy Hopps.
Music Inc. evolved into an ensemble model where a core quartet expanded for larger compositions and arrangements. Live performances at Slugs’ Saloon in New York during 1972–1973 produced Live at Slugs’ Volume I and Volume II, documenting the group’s improvisational energy and gaining international attention through European tours. In 1971, Tolliver and Cowell founded Strata-East Records, an independent label designed to return ownership to artists while taking only a small commission. This model made Strata-East one of jazz’s first artist-controlled collectives. Early releases including Music Inc. (1971) and Impact (1972) established the label’s commitment to uncompromised work. Saxophonist Clifford Jordan and poet Gil Scott-Heron recorded for the label, with Scott-Heron’s Winter in America (1974) becoming its breakthrough success.
Tolliver’s later career centered on teaching and selective recordings. He taught jazz trumpet and composition at The New School beginning around 1992 and at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. In 2007, he recorded With Love, a big band album featuring Stanley Cowell on piano, saxophonist Billy Harper, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Victor Lewis. The album earned a Grammy nomination and was named Best Large Ensemble of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association. Connect, released on Gearbox Records in 2020, marked his return to the studio after thirteen years, reuniting him with bassist Buster Williams and drummer Lenny White.
