Brother Jack McDuff

Jack McDuff was born on September 17, 1926, in Champaign, Illinois, and raised by adoptive parents in a strict religious household. His adoptive father was a minister, yet McDuff secretly listened to secular music and learned piano and pump organ at home and church. He began his professional career in the 1950s as a bass player with Joe Farrell and saxophonist Willis Jackson. In the late 1950s, McDuff taught himself Hammond organ while playing bass in Jackson’s band. His organ playing attracted Prestige Records’ attention, leading to his recording debut as leader with Brother Jack in 1960, featuring guitarist Bill Jennings.

McDuff’s most prolific period came during the 1960s soul-jazz era. Between 1960 and 1963, he recorded classics for Prestige including The Honeydripper (1961) with tenor saxophonist Jimmy Forrest and guitarist Grant Green, and Brother Jack Meets the Boss (1962) featuring saxophonist Gene Ammons. Brother Jack McDuff Live! (1963), recorded at The Front Room in Newark, New Jersey, featured tenor saxophonist Red Holloway and guitarist George Benson. Benson had not recorded commercially since 1954 when he joined McDuff’s band in 1963. The young guitarist would become a major star in part through McDuff’s mentorship and promotion of his talent.

McDuff’s style drew from the soul-jazz movement pioneered by Jimmy Smith, whose Hammond B-3 organ had transformed jazz in the late 1950s. His approach combined solid bass lines with blues-soaked solos and sophisticated harmonic progressions. Through the mid-1960s, he recorded prolifically for Atlantic Records, releasing A Change Is Gonna Come (1966) and Tobacco Road (1967). Between 1969 and 1971, Blue Note Records released Down Home Style (1969), Moon Rappin’ (1970), and Who Knows What Tomorrow’s Gonna Bring? (1971), showing his evolution from soul-jazz toward jazz-funk fusion.

McDuff recorded until his death on January 23, 2001, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at age 74 from heart failure. His final album, Brotherly Love (2001) on Concord Jazz, reunited him with Red Holloway, guitarist Pat Martino, and drummer Grady Tate. His 50-year recording career included approximately 290 releases across Prestige, Blue Note, Atlantic, and Concord Jazz. In the 1970s and 1980s, he recorded funk-influenced albums including Sophisticated Funk (1976) for Chess Records. His organ work was later sampled by hip-hop artists, notably A Tribe Called Quest’s “Scenario.”
