Brad Mehldau

Brad Mehldau was born on August 23, 1970, in Jacksonville, Florida, to an adoptive family. His father Craig was an ophthalmologist and his mother Annette a homemaker. The family moved frequently during his childhood, eventually settling in Hartford, Connecticut, where his father established his medical practice. Mehldau began classical piano studies at age six and continued formal training until age 14. At Hartford’s Hall High School, he joined the accomplished jazz band and won the Berklee School of Music high school competition as Best All-Around Musician. His early influences included classical composers Brahms and Beethoven alongside jazz pianists Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans.

Mehldau moved to New York City in 1988 to study at The New School, earning his degree in 1993. He studied under jazz pianists Fred Hersch, Junior Mance, and Kenny Werner, as well as drummer Jimmy Cobb. While a student, Mehldau toured with saxophonist Christopher Hollyday’s band in 1989 and performed in Jimmy Cobb’s ensemble with guitarist Peter Bernstein. In 1991 he joined tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman’s quartet, establishing himself as an emerging voice in contemporary jazz by the mid-1990s.

Mehldau formed his signature trio in 1994 with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy, musicians who would remain his core collaborators for decades. His first album as sole leader, “Introducing Brad Mehldau,” appeared in 1995 on Warner Bros. The trio’s breakthrough came through “The Art of the Trio, Volume One” (1997) and live recordings from New York’s Village Vanguard. His distinctive contribution was incorporating rock and pop material alongside standards and originals. “The Art of the Trio, Volume Three: Songs” (1998) featured Radiohead’s “Exit Music (For a Film)” and Nick Drake’s “River Man,” demonstrating that contemporary rock could function as a vehicle for jazz improvisation.

Throughout the 2000s, Mehldau expanded his collaborative reach significantly. He recorded “Places” (2000) for ECM Records and “Largo” (2002), working across labels and stylistic frameworks. His 2006 collaboration with guitarist Pat Metheny, “Metheny Mehldau” (Nonesuch), marked a significant career milestone. Mehldau also worked frequently with saxophonist Joshua Redman on several acclaimed recordings, establishing a deep musical partnership. He recorded with saxophonist Lee Konitz and led ensemble projects including “Quartet” (2007), further cementing his role as a bandleader.

Mehldau’s distinctive voice emerged from his synthesis of classical training, bop tradition, and contemporary sensibility. His incorporation of rock and pop covers alongside his sophisticated harmonic language rooted in Bach and Bill Evans positioned him as a bridge between generations. His improvisation balanced intellectual rigor with emotional immediacy, and his compositions blended formal sophistication with introspection. By the early 2000s, Mehldau had become one of contemporary jazz’s most influential pianists, shaping how musicians approached repertoire, composition, and improvisation. His willingness to blur genre boundaries while maintaining artistic integrity established him as a defining figure of post-bop jazz.
