Bobbi Humphrey was born on April 25, 1950, in Marlin, Texas, and raised in Dallas from age two. She discovered the flute as a young girl and began formal training in high school. Her early work combined classical and jazz skills through frequent solo performances. Humphrey continued her studies at Texas Southern University from 1968 to 1970, then at Southern Methodist University on scholarship from 1970 to 1971. During a talent competition at Southern Methodist, Dizzy Gillespie served as judge and urged her to pursue jazz in New York City. She wrote to the Apollo Theatre and received a telegram reserving a spot on Amateur Night.
Humphrey moved to New York in June 1971 with four hundred dollars and her flute. Within three days she jammed with Duke Ellington. Within two weeks she signed with Blue Note Records, becoming the first female instrumentalist to do so. Executive producer George Butler signed her quickly. Her 1971 debut album Flute-In featured straight-ahead jazz standards with trumpeter Lee Morgan. Two years later, producer Larry Mizell produced Blacks and Blues in three days at Hollywood’s Sound Factory. The album marked a shift toward jazz-funk, with Humphrey’s flute solos improvised over Mizell’s crafted grooves. Blacks and Blues peaked at No. 84 on the Billboard 200 and broke into the R&B charts. Dig This! (1972), Satin Doll (1974), Live at Montreux (1974), and Fancy Dancer (1975) solidified her reputation as the First Lady of the Flute. She surprised audiences at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1973. Billboard named her Best Female Instrumentalist in 1976.
Humphrey signed with Epic Records in 1977 and released Tailor Made that year. She appeared on Stevie Wonder’s platinum album Songs in the Key of Life. Epic released Freestyle in 1978 and The Good Life in 1979, featuring session musicians Richard Tee, Eric Gale, and Ralph MacDonald. Despite strong album sales throughout the 1970s, she received minimal financial compensation from Blue Note. In 1977 she established Innovative Artist Management and The Bobbi Humphrey Music Company, which signed with Warner Bros. in 1990. From the 1980s onward, she performed regularly while recording less frequently. In 1994 she founded Paradise Sounds Records and released Passion Flute. Her 1970s recordings became culturally enduring. Blacks and Blues and her signature track Harlem River Drive were sampled extensively in hip-hop by Eric B. & Rakim, Grand Puba, Digable Planets, and Ludacris. She appeared on Common’s album Electric Circus in 2002. Humphrey has mentored emerging artists, lectured on intellectual property rights, and remained active in the Harlem jazz scene. She cites Hubert Laws, Herbie Mann, and James Moody as key influences.
