Bio
Billy Higgins was born in Los Angeles on October 11, 1936. He began playing drums at age 12, initially supporting R&B artists including Bo Diddley and Amos Milburn. By age 19, Higgins joined high school friend Don Cherry in the Jazz Messiahs, a group that also featured saxophonist James Clay and bassist Dexter Gordon. This early work established his ability to move fluidly between R&B and emerging jazz contexts. The partnership with Cherry proved formative for both musicians.
Higgins’s breakthrough came through Ornette Coleman beginning in 1957. He and Cherry rehearsed with Coleman, absorbing his approach to improvisation based on melody rather than chord changes. The quartet debuted at Los Angeles’s Hilcrest Club in 1958, opening for pianist Paul Bley. Their New York debut at the Five Spot Café in 1959 reshaped jazz discourse. The Shape of Jazz to Come, recorded May 22, 1959, on Atlantic Records, paired Higgins with Cherry on cornet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Coleman on saxophone. On tracks like “Lonely Woman,” Higgins demonstrated how to maintain propulsive pulse while responding to harmonic freedom, enabling fluid ensemble conversation. Higgins left Coleman’s band around 1960–1961 following personal difficulties that cost him his cabaret card.
Moving to New York, Higgins became Blue Note Records’s premier sideman during the mid-1960s through early 1970s. He anchored sessions for Lee Morgan, Jackie McLean, Hank Mobley, and Dexter Gordon. Morgan praised him: “He never overplays, but you always know he’s there.” Higgins appeared on The Sidewinder (1963) and Go! (1962), among numerous classics. His restrained, melodic approach balanced technical precision with sensitivity. He worked with Herbie Hancock and Joe Henderson, raising the standard of every ensemble he joined.
From the mid-1970s onward, Higgins shaped post-bop drumming through sustained collaboration with pianist Cedar Walton on Eastern Rebellion (1976) and Eastern Rebellion 2 (1977). He also recorded Rejoicing (1984) with Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden, showcasing his warm responsiveness in an acoustic trio setting. In 1978, Higgins returned to Los Angeles. He co-founded The World Stage with poet Kamau Daaood in 1989, nurturing younger musicians while teaching at UCLA’s jazz program. Recording continued through 2001 with saxophonist Charles Lloyd. Higgins died on May 3, 2001, at Inglewood Hospital from kidney and liver failure, the result of hepatitis contracted decades earlier. His legacy rests on an extraordinary capacity to serve the music—never imposing his own voice, yet invariably elevating those around him.
