Bio
Billy Harper was born January 17, 1943, in Houston, Texas. He began singing in church at age five and received a saxophone at eleven. By fourteen, Harper had formed his first quintet while performing in Houston’s rhythm-and-blues bands. He graduated cum laude from North Texas State University in 1965 with a Bachelor of Music degree. During his time there, he won first prize at the Kansas Jazz Festival as a member of the One O’Clock Lab Band.
Harper relocated to New York City in 1966 to pursue jazz full-time. He joined Gil Evans’ orchestra in 1967, appearing on the 1973 album Svengali and composing two signature pieces: “Priestess” and “Thoroughbred.” Both compositions displayed his gift for spiritually resonant melodies rooted in blues-inflected post-Coltrane saxophone. Concurrently, Harper served with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers from 1968 to 1970. He briefly collaborated with Elvin Jones in 1970 and became a regular member of Max Roach’s quintet in the late 1970s. Throughout the decade, he also performed with the Thad Jones–Mel Lewis Orchestra.
Harper’s leadership career began in 1973 with the album Capra Black, which blended post-bop complexity with gospel-inflected spirituality. Black Saint followed in 1975 on the Italian label. During the 1970s, he recorded prolifically for European labels, including In Europe (1979) and Trying to Make Heaven My Home (1979) with his quintet featuring pianist Francesca Tanksley and drummer Malcolm Pinson. The 1980s saw reduced recording activity, but Harper returned with Live on Tour in the Far East (1991), a three-volume set demonstrating his international reach. Into the new millennium, his recording output remained sporadic, though he maintained an active performing career. He increasingly appeared with Randy Weston’s ensembles and collaborated with The Cookers, an all-star septet formed in the late 2000s.
Harper began teaching saxophone and improvisation at Livingston College of Rutgers University in 1975. Later he taught at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. His rigorous, blues-rooted approach to tenor tone and spiritual expression influenced subsequent generations, notably saxophonist Gary Thomas. Harper received two National Endowment for the Arts composition grants and the Down Beat International Critics Award for Tenor Saxophone in two consecutive years. Into his eighties, he remained an active performer, conducting European tours and continuing to record and perform with his quintet and The Cookers.
