Bennie Maupin was born on August 29, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan. He grew up listening to gospel, classical, jazz, and blues played by neighbors and family. Maupin began tenor saxophone in high school and studied at the Detroit Institute of Musical Arts while performing in local bands. In 1963, at age 23, he relocated to New York City and quickly became a sought-after sideman. Between 1966 and 1972, Maupin worked with Horace Silver, Roy Haynes, McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan, and Woody Shaw. His harmonic sophistication and willingness to explore free improvisation distinguished his approach from other musicians of the era.
Maupin’s prominence emerged through his participation on Miles Davis’s 1969 fusion album Bitches Brew, where his bass clarinet provided essential textural depth. From 1969 to 1972, he recorded extensively with Davis on Jack Johnson, Big Fun, On the Corner, and Bitches Brew. These sessions established him as a central figure in fusion’s development. Following his Davis years, Maupin joined Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi Sextet in 1971, collaborating with bassist Buster Williams, drummer Billy Hart, trumpeter Eddie Henderson, trombonist Julian Priester, and keyboardist Patrick Gleeson. The ensemble recorded Mwandishi (1971), Crossings (1972), and Sextant (1973), synthesizing jazz, funk, rock, and free improvisation. When Hancock transitioned toward funk on Headhunters (1973), Maupin remained the sole member retained from the previous lineup.
As a bandleader, Maupin recorded The Jewel in the Lotus (1974) for ECM Records, demonstrating his command across tenor, soprano, and alto saxophones, flute, and bass clarinet. His subsequent albums included Slow Traffic to the Right (1977) and Moonscapes (1978). In 1977, he participated in Almanac, a post-bop session with pianist Mike Nock, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Eddie Marshall. Later work included the 1998 electroacoustic album Driving While Black with synthesist Patrick Gleeson. Maupin maintained a prolific recording presence across Columbia, Blue Note, and other labels, appearing on over 295 releases throughout his career. Into the 21st century, he released Penumbra (2006) and Early Reflections (2008) with the Bennie Maupin Ensemble on Cryptogramophone Records and taught at the California Institute of the Arts.
