Bio
Art Blakey was born Arthur William Blakey on October 11, 1919, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His mother died when he was six months old. Annie Parran, a family friend, raised him in a devout Seventh-day Adventist household. By age 13, he played piano in Pittsburgh nightclubs while working in steel mills. At 14, he led his own dance band. Around this time, a club owner ordered him off the piano at gunpoint to make room for visiting pianist Erroll Garner. Blakey switched to drums and studied the aggressive swing styles of Chick Webb and Sid Catlett. This transition would shape his later polyrhythmic innovations.
Blakey joined Mary Lou Williams’s band at Kelly’s Stable on 52nd Street in New York City in 1942. He then worked with Fletcher Henderson’s orchestra from 1943 to 1944 and Billy Eckstine’s bebop ensemble from 1944 to 1947. His bandmates included Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis. In 1948, Blakey traveled to West Africa for a year, converting to Islam and adopting the name Abdullah Ibn Buhaina. He returned to the United States and founded the 17 Messengers, an early incarnation of his group. This African experience deepened his understanding of polyrhythmic drumming.
Blakey and pianist Horace Silver co-founded The Jazz Messengers in the mid-1950s as a cooperative quintet. They recorded live at Birdland in 1954. Silver left in 1956, and Blakey became sole leader for 35 years. The group became a training ground for major talent: trumpeters Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Wynton Marsalis, and Clifford Brown; saxophonists Wayne Shorter, Johnny Griffin, and Benny Golson; pianists Keith Jarrett and Cedar Walton. Blakey recorded nearly 30 albums for Blue Note Records. Moanin’ (1959), featuring Lee Morgan on trumpet, Benny Golson and Wayne Shorter on saxophones, and Bobby Timmons on piano, became the definitive hard bop recording and helped establish the style.
Blakey’s drumming combined thunderous press rolls, polyrhythmic independence, and communicative bass-drum accents. His style merged African rhythmic traditions with bebop drive. He refused to adopt fusion trends in the 1970s, maintaining his commitment to straight-ahead jazz. His hearing declined in his final years, but he continued performing. Blakey received the NEA Jazz Master award in 1988, Down Beat Hall of Fame induction in 1981, and a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Group Performance in 1984. He died of lung cancer on October 16, 1990, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan, five days after his 71st birthday.
Blakey’s influence extended far beyond his technical innovations in drumming. Dozens of Jazz Messengers alumni became bandleaders and jazz pillars themselves. He established a mentorship model that students called his “one-man university” approach to artistic development. This legacy of nurturing talent ensured that his impact on jazz continued long after his death.
