Bio
Alice Lucille McLeod Coltrane was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 27, 1937 into a musical family with deep roots in gospel and jazz. She began piano lessons at age seven and studied classical music and jazz. Around 1960, she worked as an intermission pianist at the Blue Note Jazz Club in Paris and studied with pianist Bud Powell. Coltrane collaborated with Kenny Burrell, Johnny Griffin, Lucky Thompson, and Yusef Lateef before joining vibraphonist Terry Gibbs’s quartet in 1962. She met John Coltrane in 1963 while performing with Gibbs.
Before meeting John Coltrane, Alice had married Kenny Hagood in 1960 and had a daughter, Michelle. The marriage ended due to Hagood’s heroin addiction, and she returned to Detroit. She relocated to New York in 1962 and became one of the few female jazz instrumentalists performing in bebop circles. In 1965 she married John Coltrane, and the following year she replaced McCoy Tyner as pianist in his quartet. Coltrane remained in the quartet until John’s death from liver cancer on July 17, 1967. She recorded six studio sessions with his group, contributing modal harmonies and dissonance that complemented his free-jazz explorations.
John and Alice had three children together: John Jr., Ravi (born 1965, tenor saxophonist), and Oran (born 1967, alto saxophonist). Following his death, she emerged as a bandleader and composer. Her 1968 album “A Monastic Trio” marked her debut as leader and introduced the harp to jazz, a virtually unused instrument in the genre at that time. The album featured Pharoah Sanders on saxophone, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Ben Riley on drums. Through the early 1970s, Coltrane established spiritual jazz with albums including “Ptah, The El Daoud” (1970) and “Journey in Satchidananda” (1971), both featuring Sanders. These records demonstrated her sophisticated command of modal improvisation on piano and harp.
Coltrane moved to California in 1972 and founded the Vedantic Center in 1975, transitioning toward Hindu spiritual practice and adopting the monastic name Turiyasangitananda. She established the Shanti Anantam ashram in Agoura Hills in 1983 and focused increasingly on devotional music and spiritual leadership. Recording activity decreased through the late 1970s and 1980s. A 25-year hiatus from major performances ended in 2004 with the album “Translinear Light,” which featured her sons Ravi and Oran alongside bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Jack DeJohnette. She performed at Ann Arbor’s Hill Auditorium on September 23, 2006, in what would have been John’s 80th birthday concert. Coltrane died of respiratory failure on January 12, 2007 at West Hills Hospital in Los Angeles, aged 69. She was buried alongside John Coltrane at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale, New York.
