Studying with Bud Powell in Paris around 1960 positioned Alice McLeod within bebop circles before her work with Terry Gibbs’s quartet from 1962 to 1963 brought wider recognition. Meeting John Coltrane in 1963 and joining his group in 1966 as McCoy Tyner’s replacement placed her at the center of free jazz’s most radical developments. Recordings including “Live At The Village Vanguard Again!” and “Expression” documented her piano work alongside John’s final explorations before his death in July 1967. Within a year, she released “A Monastic Trio” (1968) on Impulse!, marking both her leadership debut and her first recordings on harp alongside piano.
Impulse! recordings through the early 1970s established spiritual jazz as a distinct movement. “Ptah, The El Daoud” (1970) with Pharoah Sanders and Joe Henderson demonstrated her command of modal improvisation on both piano and harp, while “Journey In Satchidananda” (1971) combined Sanders’s tenor saxophone with her harp in meditative explorations. “Universal Consciousness” (1971) and “Lord Of Lords” (1972) incorporated string orchestras and Eastern musical concepts, expanding beyond standard jazz instrumentation. Her move to Warner Bros. yielded “Illuminations” (1974) with Carlos Santana, exploring electric textures distinct from her Impulse! acoustic work.
Founding the Vedantic Center in 1975 shifted her focus toward spiritual teaching under the name Turiyasangitananda. Recording activity decreased through devotional music releases on Warner Bros. and Avatar, though she maintained John Coltrane’s musical legacy through the John Coltrane Foundation. A 25-year hiatus from major performances ended with “Translinear Light” (2004), featuring her sons Ravi and Oran alongside Charlie Haden and Jack DeJohnette. Final concerts in fall 2006 at venues including Hill Auditorium and the San Francisco Jazz Festival brought her full circle, performing on what would have been John’s 80th birthday.
