Albert Ayler

Albert Ayler was born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, on July 13, 1936, into a musical family. His father, Edward Ayler, taught him saxophone in childhood, and by age ten he performed duets with his father in church. Ayler mastered bebop as a teenager while playing rhythm-and-blues in local bands. He studied oboe and saxophone at John Adams High School and trained at the Academy of Music under Benny Miller. In 1952, he spent two summers performing with harmonica virtuoso Little Walter.

Ayler served in U.S. Army bands from 1958 to 1961. He relocated to Sweden in 1962 and made his first recordings with Danish musicians, including the album Something Different!!!!! on Bird Notes. His official debut, My Name Is Albert Ayler, appeared on Debut Records in 1963. After settling in New York in late 1963, Ayler entered his most creatively fertile period. He performed with pianist Cecil Taylor and trumpeter Don Cherry, developing his distinctive sound rooted in gospel, folk melodies, and marches. His style featured wide intervallic leaps, shrieks, and raw emotionalism that transcended conventional jazz harmony. Spiritual Unity, released in 1964 on ESP-Disk’ with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray, established him as a foundational figure in the free jazz movement. John Coltrane admired his work and Ayler performed at Coltrane’s funeral service in July 1967.

From 1965 to 1969, Ayler recorded extensively for Impulse! Records. He released Bells in 1965, In Greenwich Village in 1967, and Love Cry in 1968. His brother Donald, a trumpeter, became his frequent collaborator during this period. Ayler’s final studio sessions in 1969 incorporated funk, soul, and rock rhythms on Music Is the Healing Force of the Universe. He toured France in July 1970. Upon returning to New York, he disappeared in early November.

On November 25, 1970, Ayler’s body was recovered from the East River at Brooklyn’s Congress Street Pier. The New York Medical Examiner ruled his death asphyxia by submersion under undetermined circumstances. Suicide appeared likely but was never officially confirmed. He died at age 34, cutting short an uncompromising career that brought him little commercial success during his lifetime. After his death, Ayler’s influence expanded significantly, establishing him as a preeminent figure in jazz history.
